Identification of medical instruments

Identification and registration of medical instruments through intelligent vision technology

During a surgical procedure several numerous medical instruments and materials are used. At the end of surgery all these instruments are manually counted and afterwards desinfected and sterilised at the central sterile supply department (CSSD).

This manual count is of crucial importance to patient safety. However, the reality shows that medical instruments are regularly retrieved from patient's bodies.

In the current situation in hospitals, medical instruments are deliverd to the OR in instrument boxes prior to the operation. These instruments are counted before and after the surgical procedure.

The manual counting of instruments is a drudgery task that is prone to human errors.

NewCompliance is developing a product that automates a major part of the counting procedure. A visual sensor will take over the process and will separate, identify and count the instruments. As a result, missing instruments can be identified quickly.

This project is based upon a partnership with the Technical University of Delft, several companies in Delft and a renowned Dutch hospital.
