Prevention and treatment of (catheter-related) bloodstream infections

1. Registration of and control on the intervention guidelines

Currently NewCompliance is developing a software application that supports the prevention and treatment of (catheter-related) bloodstream infections (CRBSI). “The prevention of catheter related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) and treatment of severe sepsis” is one of the ten themes of the ‘Safety program’ established by the Dutch government. The aim of this evidence based ‘Safety program’ is to reduce the amount of unintended preventable damage brought to patients. The bundle of interventions compiled by a team of experts resulted within hospitals abroad in an excessive decrease of 7.1 to 1.4 infections per 1000 catheter days. NewCompliance is developing a CRBSI software system that supports medical staff to comply with the infection prevention guidelines.

2. CRBSI Software: Insertion procedure, daily monitoring and action list at after diagnosis

The CRBSI software application consists out of three modules, which are: registration of the insertion procedure, registration of the daily monitoring practices and the analysis tool. The first module includes the registration of parameters that are crucial during the insertion procedure. During the insertion of the catheter it is for example of great importance to work in a sterile environment. Second of all, daily monitoring of colonisation is a determining factor in avoiding CRBSI. The findings of daily observation need to be recorded at least every 24 hours. When the daily monitoring has not been conducted, the software program automatically sends a notification to the responsible health care professional. Strict compliance with the daily monitoring practices ensures timely recognition and hence adequate treatment of CRBSI. When CRBSI is diagnosed, the software displays a list of actions that should be taken within six hours.

3. Feedback and analysis through the analysis tool

The software registration and feedback process runs from the moment the central venous catheter is inserted until the catheter is removed. The analysis tool, provides insights and management information, regarding the entire process. As a result it is possible to motivate medical staff to correctly implement the infection prevention guidelines. Compliance with daily control practices and timely treatment of CRBSI will eventually lead to less complications and potential mortality.
